Mrs. J was admitted from Encompass Health on February 10, 2026, to our community for orthopedic care following a surgical right below-the-knee amputation and to begin therapy in preparation for a possible prosthesis. She has a medical history of Type 2 diabetes mellitus, speech and language deficits following cerebral infarction, and is also a dialysis patient. During her transfer, Mrs. J shared that she felt understandably anxious and uncertain about what to expect. Upon arrival, however, she noted that the community appeared welcoming, with a pleasant atmosphere that immediately provided her with a sense of relief.
At the time of admission, she initially felt somewhat overwhelmed by the many unfamiliar faces. This feeling was quickly eased when our concierge warmly greeted her and presented her with a welcome bag containing thoughtful items and helpful community information. Mrs. J described this gesture as “very cool” and appreciated the opportunity to ask questions, which further reassured her and helped her feel more at ease. As her goals were discussed with our interdisciplinary team and therapy department, she shared that she wanted to “feel like herself again” upon returning home, become more independent, and not feel like a burden to her loved ones in her daily activities. She expressed that the hospitality she experienced during her first 48 hours exceeded what she could have imagined, and she felt deeply supported by the many team members who checked in on her.
At admission, Mrs. J required maximum assistance and had not yet been fitted for a prosthesis, as she was still undergoing therapy to strengthen her right leg in preparation. She shared with the nurse that she felt she might never walk again, describing how difficult the transition had been since her surgery in October 2025. Mrs. J also shared that she went through a very challenging emotional period and felt deeply discouraged; however, she expressed great gratitude for her nurse, Shari, who supported her through those moments and helped her develop a more hopeful perspective.
While in the community, she actively participated in Recreational Therapy activities, with bingo being her favorite. She shared that the activity aides consistently motivated and encouraged her, which played a significant role in her progress. She also appreciated the concierge department’s frequent check-ins, which brought both comfort and small tokens of kindness in her carts. Her favorite part of her stay, she shared, was the people around her, stating that if she could rate her experience an 11, she would.
During her stay, she met Dennis Oehler from our Amputee Walking School, whose personal story left her feeling inspired and motivated. Mrs. J began therapy with her prosthesis in June 2026 and has progressed from requiring maximum assistance to walking 200 feet with supervision. She shared that she is most proud of feeling comfortable in her prosthetic leg and being able to walk again. Mrs. J expressed deep gratitude to the therapy department for helping her reach this milestone and stated that if she ever needed to stay in a community again, Coral Reef would be her top choice. She and her family have expressed how much they value the sense of fellowship within the community.
Although she initially joined us for therapy, Mrs. J has truly become part of our family and will carry with her the cherished friendships and meaningful connections she made along her journey. She shared that she will speak highly of her experience and hopes to inspire others by saying, “Never say never. All things are possible—you have to put your body and soul into everything, and you can do it too.”
Mrs. J has not only become a valued member of our community, but she will also be joining our long-term care program. We are honored to continue being a part of her recovery and to support her as she begins this new and inspiring chapter of her life. She will continue to receive compassionate care from our nursing team, along with the opportunity to participate in the activities she has grown to love. We are truly grateful that she will be staying with us and look forward to sharing many more special moments and milestones together.
